In light of the recent outbreaks of Ebola in Africa, and the
couple of confirmed cases in the US the recent question of Ebola in household
pets has been brought up.
Research shows
that dogs living in endemic areas (Africa etc.) have antibodies to the virus, however, none of these dogs have become actively infected with the Ebola virus.
The dogs with the antibodies also do not show symptoms of the disease.
The likelihood of a dog being exposed to the
Ebola virus outside of the endemic regions is extremely unlikely, as it
requires contact with bodily secretions of a human, or other animal, with
symptoms of Ebola. Despite whether or
not dogs can contract the virus, there is no current research that a dog with
antibodies to the virus will shed the virus. That said, there is no current evidence that a dog can infect a human with
the Ebola virus.
